Redemptorists

CSsR – Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists)

In Latin, the abbreviation for this congregation is CSsR (Congregatio Sanctissimi Redemptoris), meaning Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer.
The Redemptorist order was founded on November 9, 1732, in Scala (near Naples, Italy) by Alphonsus (Alphonsus) Maria de Liguori (1696–1787).

The congregation received official approval from Pope Benedict XIV in 1749.
Its community of priests and brothers is devoted to missionary work and to preaching the Gospel to the poor and most abandoned.

The Redemptorists are well known for parish missions, retreats, and simple, accessible preaching.
A special devotion of the order is to Our Lady of Perpetual Help; the original icon of this Marian devotion is kept in the Redemptorist Church of Sant’Alfonso in Rome.

Today, the congregation is active in many countries, with provinces and regions across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia, and its general headquarters in Rome.
Their ministries include not only missions and retreats but also parish pastoral work, youth ministry, social justice/initiatives, the care of shrines, and publishing apostolates.

In 1830, Redemptorists established themselves in Belgium, and by 1832 also in the Netherlands.

From Belgium, missionaries left Belgium for their mission to serve in the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Ukraine; from the Netherlands, they departed for Brazil and Suriname.
